As hot as a summer in the south can be getting out on the water and catching some stripers is always a great way to spend a day. Luckily, I live in a state with two great fisheries for Striped Bass; Lake Murray and Lake Hartwell. This past summer I was lucky enough to make a couple trips to both of these lakes. When going on a fishing trip it is always important to make sure you’re educated on good techniques, and have the proper gear.
Techniques to Target Stripers
There are many different techniques fishermen use when targeting stripers. The technique used can be dependent on many different conditions such as:
- Time of year
- Water temperature
- Weather conditions
- Other possibilities
Examples of different ways people catch stripers in these fisheries include:
- Free lining with live bait
- Trolling with live bait on planer boards
- Fishing with live bait at specific depths
- Targeting fish schooling
- Using spoons
I’ll discuss the techniques I used below.
My Summer Trips to Lake Hartwell & Murray
My first trip of the year was at Lake Murray using planer boards. We were using live herring as bait with a planer board attached to the end of our line while trolling. Although it was a very hot summer day we were able to put a few nice stripers in the boat.
The next time I was able to get on the water was at Lake Hartwell fishing with live bait at specific depths where we located fish on the graphs. The bite started off slow but as the morning went on we were able to put several nice fish in the boat. Also, on this trip we had one line out as a free line with live bait, and we caught a couple nice ones. It is always nice being able to catch fish using multiple techniques.
My last trip of the year was completely different than the others, I went to Lake Murray, and fished at night. This was my first time night fishing, and it was for sure completely different than anything I had done before. We got on the water right at dark, and put our lines out trolling at a slow speed. It wasn’t long that we got our fish bite, and from then on for the next hour the bite was great. It was nice to get out on the water this summer, and see new ways to catch fish in the summer heat.
Staying Cool with HUK Gear
One of the keys to staying cool on the water on a hot summer day is having comfortable clothing. HUK apparel is my preferred clothing to wear when fishing, and I have never been disappointed in any of their gear. HUK always is able to keep me comfortable while fishing whether its rain gear protecting me from getting wet, or performance clothing keeping me cool on a summer day.
I would recommend HUK apparel to anybody and it is something I never forget when going to the lake.
Excited for Future Trips
My time on the water this past summer created memories that I will not soon forget. Fishing is always a hobby where you can learn something new every time, and I was able to learn a lot about catching stripers this year. I look forward to being able to visit Lake Murray and Lake Hartwell, two of my favorite fisheries, again next year.
